Artist's Statement:
"Inspired by my father's love of nature, I studied botany at Oxford and earned a PhD at the University of Dundee. With years of experience in research and teaching in Canada, Germany, and the U.K., I moved to Denman Island in 2005 to start something very different: to grow my own food, immerse myself in a rich and fascinating environment, and to find a new path for examining nature through art.
My photography concentrates on intimate landscapes and macro images of plants and insects, thereby fusing my knowledge of organisms with their unadorned natural beauty, creating a link between science and art. I am particularly interested in the exploration and interpretation of patterns, whether the leaf blades on a woodland floor or the mining tunnels of wood-boring beetles. Through my lens I am exploring the exciting world of nature so that I may share my passion through my images."
