pottery by Marjo VanTooren |
Artist Info:
Marjo VanTooren creates both wheel-thrown pottery, and hand-built pieces including platters, bowls, cups, beads, buttons and pendant necklaces. Spiral shells, or tiny fern fronds and other leaves pressed into the clay surface to create a delicate impression later highlighted with iron oxide, or dipped in vibrant colours, are part of a wide repertoire. Combining different colors of clay to achieve a marbling effect is another trade-mark technique.
Artist's Statement:
"I started making ceramic beads at the age of 16, and oh so many years later, I am still enjoying it.
Imprints in clay of leaves, lace and just about everything else you can think of became another "addiction". Then there was making very large bowls and on and on it goes.
Through coincidence, I became a pottery teacher in Germany and have continued teaching on Denman Island.
When I am not thinking about clay and its endless possibilities, gardening takes over. Another important occupation at this stage in my life is grandmothering two young boys."
